On Wednesday, FBI agents executed court-approved search warrants at Sen. L. Louise Lucas's legislative office and a cannabis dispensary she co-owns in Portsmouth as part of a federal corruption and illegal marijuana sales probe, acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said.
Officials and reporting say the probe into Lucas began during the Biden administration and has examined evidence that she solicited or accepted bribes over roughly three years.
Lucas accused the Trump administration of using the raid to intimidate and silence challengers, and Virginia Democrats including House Speaker Don Scott, Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell and Attorney General Jay Jones condemned the action.
Federal agents executed warrants at 10 locations tied to the bribery probe, and reporting notes a federal grand jury in April indicted Carlton Upton Jr. on three felony counts of wire fraud.
A federal judge signed the search warrants, and prosecutors must now determine whether to bring charges against Lucas or others.
