Mamdani Grocery Backlash

The Multicultural Business Coalition, an immigrant-led business group, voted to sue New York City in the coming weeks to block Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for five taxpayer-funded grocery stores, alleging unfair competition. Mamdani said Monday the city-run stores would sell a core basket of goods—including produce, meat, bread, milk and cheese—at prices 30% below private grocers. The proposal carries a reported $70 million public cost and would place stores across all five boroughs. Critics are questioning how the city would fund the discount after grocery prices rose 33% nationwide since 2019.
