The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most outlets agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

TikTok and parent company ByteDance agreed to pay $400 million to settle Justice Department allegations that they violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The settlement requires $300 million upfront and another $100 million after a court vacates an earlier consent decree involving TikTok predecessor Musical.ly. The DOJ lawsuit, filed in 2024, accused the companies of allowing children to use the platform and collecting their data without meeting federal parental-consent requirements. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department would pursue companies that fail to protect children online.
