What happened

Mark Thompson will remain CNN’s leader after the merger, taking the title chairman and editor-in-chief of CNN Worldwide. Thompson will report to Skydance CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, while CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss will not oversee CNN. The deal brings CNN and CBS News under one corporate owner after Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. CNN employees had faced uncertainty over possible newsroom changes, including speculation about a CBS News combination. Thompson said he believes Skydance supports independent news and views news as a strategic opportunity. The merger was expected to close Tuesday, but CNN’s operating details remain unfinished.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the decision as reassurance that editorial independence could survive the ownership change. CNN said the leadership announcement keeps the network separate from CBS News for now, defusing speculation about an expanded role for Bari Weiss. Raw Story focused on the Ellison family’s ties to the Trump administration as a source of uncertainty about the network’s future.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: New York Post, under the headline “CNN’s Mark Thompson to stay on after Ellison takeover, Bari Weiss to remain in current role”.
