What happened

Authorities identified the man found dead in a barrel at Lake Mead as Edward Lelburian Jackson, known as “Buddy.” Boaters discovered the corroded barrel near Hemenway Harbor in May 2022, after falling water exposed part of the lakebed. The drought-driven drop also uncovered other remains, turning a long-hidden death into a public cold case. Jackson, an Arkansas native, traveled widely and was last seen by relatives in the early 1980s. Investigators believe he was killed then by a single gunshot to the back of the head. Police found no evidence tying the killing to organized crime, but have not ruled it out. The homicide investigation remains open.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the identification as restoring a name to an anonymous victim, while stressing forensic work and Las Vegas history. The Guardian called the case a haunting mystery partly solved, and linked its timing to an era of organized crime in Las Vegas. The New York Times highlighted officials’ account of collaboration and a family DNA match.

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: New York Post, under the headline “Lake Mead murder victim found in barrel in 2022 ID’d — solving 40-plus-year cold case”.
