What happened

  • Federal agents arrested Thomas Markle Sr., Meghan Markle’s 82-year-old father, at a Florida senior care facility Friday on one federal charge of possessing child sexual abuse material.
  • Investigators seized about 78 items containing suspected child sexual abuse material from two Los Angeles-area storage units he rented, according to federal authorities.
  • An FBI affidavit alleges some photographs show Markle sexually abusing young girls, with a witness identifying him as the adult pictured.
  • Markle previously denied possessing abuse material, and his court-appointed attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment after his arrest.
  • Markle appeared in federal court in Tampa and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

How the left told it

Left-leaning outlets largely reported the arrest alongside Meghan’s explanation that she distanced herself from her father to protect her children. CNN, The Guardian and HuffPost highlighted her statement that she was “deeply distressed.” Later coverage from Al Jazeera and the Daily Beast emphasized federal allegations about photographs depicting Markle with children.

How the right told it

Right-leaning outlets largely framed the arrest around the alleged abuse material and the expanding investigation. The Washington Examiner detailed the federal evidence and potential sentence. The Daily Mail headlined that Markle “was photographed abusing girls, FBI claims,” while the New York Post called the allegations “unspeakable acts.”
