The reporting
Comedy Central announced that “South Park” will be billed as “South America” for its Season 29 premiere on Sept. 16. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said the change was “inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google,” referring to their map updates after President Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The statement also thanked parent company Paramount, calling it “a Skydance Capitulation.” Trump has also renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” and floated renaming New Mexico “New America.”
Analysis & opinion
South Park trollLeans Left
South Park’s mock name change is an intentional jab at Trump over his place-renaming campaign. The stunt is meant to ridicule or embarrass him by turning his own renaming push into a joke.
Renaming excessBalanced
Trump has become too focused on renaming places. That fixation is excessive enough that mocking it is fair and natural.
