What happened
Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter and Broadway composer, died at 56. His family said he died Thursday night, while his mother, Suzanne Sheik, said cardiac arrest or organ failure followed a recent hospitalization. Initial statements from his team and family had not named the illness or treatment, saying only that he was in critical but stable condition. Sheik first reached pop fame with “Barely Breathing,” a radio hit that stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 55 weeks. He later moved into theater with lyricist Steven Sater on “Spring Awakening,” which tackled adolescent sexuality, abortion and suicide. His later work included stage projects and the 2022 album “Claptrap.”
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning accounts presented Sheik as a crossover figure, tying 1990s alt-pop success to award-winning theater work. CNN leaned on his dual identity as a Tony- and Grammy-winning songwriter tied to “Spring Awakening”. The Guardian foregrounded the medical end of his hospitalization. CNN also treated the show as a breakthrough that brought outsider energy and frank teen themes to Broadway.
From the right
Right-leaning accounts centered the Broadway breakthrough while leaving more room around the still-private medical picture. Breitbart News used Sheik’s own description of the creative team as Broadway outsiders who wanted to “shake things up”. Epoch Times emphasized that an official cause of death had not been publicly disclosed.
