What happened

An Ohio judge sentenced Caleb Flynn on October 5 to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn. A jury had found the former American Idol contestant and church pastor guilty the previous week of aggravated murder and related charges in Ashley’s February 2026 killing. Prosecutors said Flynn shot Ashley, a 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach, while she slept, staged a break-in and blamed an intruder; Flynn said he did not kill her. His lawyers argued investigators found no evidence he fired a gun that day, and the weapon was not found at the scene. Flynn maintained his innocence and said he would keep fighting.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the sentence as punishment for a calculated betrayal, with family harm and religious manipulation central. CNN centered prosecutors’ argument that the killing grew partly from Flynn’s affair, then lingered on daughters’ letters and the judge’s rebuke of his church role.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets led with the family reckoning, giving sharper weight to the daughters’ rejection than to courtroom theory. Fox News emphasized Flynn weeping as his daughters asked why he killed their mother and refused prison visits. The New York Post cast the affair as a selfish betrayal, while the Daily Mail highlighted relatives answering grief with forgiveness.
