What happened

The Television Academy and Amazon agreed to make Prime Video the exclusive global home of the Emmy Awards for six years, starting with the 2027 ceremony. The Emmys have aired on broadcast television since 1955, with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC rotating the show for the past three decades. The shift follows other major awards moving to streaming, including the Oscars going to YouTube in 2029 and Netflix streaming the Screen Actors Guild Awards since 2024. Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said one long-term home would give the show continuity. The ceremony will be free on Prime Video in more than 200 countries. Amazon and the Academy said more fan features are planned, but gave no details.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the deal as both a historic break from broadcast TV and a chance to build a bigger streaming-era audience. CNN stressed the end of the Emmys’ long network run and cast Prime Video’s win as part of a broader fight for live-event draws. The Los Angeles Times emphasized the Academy’s bid to widen the awards show’s reach and relevance beyond one night.
