What happened

Eva Marie Saint died at 102 at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Her family representative said the cause was natural. Saint won the supporting actress Oscar for her film debut as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 drama “On the Waterfront.” She later became internationally known as Eve Kendall, the spy opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller “North by Northwest.” In her first Hollywood decade, she made only seven films while rejecting studio contracts and raising her children. Saint was pregnant when she accepted her Oscar and joked she might have the baby there. Her last work was voice acting about five years before her death.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Saint as a defining classic-Hollywood figure whose career stood out for both longevity and independence. The Boston Globe lingered on her rare debut impact and her firm control over Hollywood demands. El Pais emphasized her long life and nearly eight-decade body of work as a link to an older screen era.
