What happened

Actor and comedian Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday as jury selection began in his criminal trial. Brand faces three rape counts, three sexual assault counts and one indecent assault count involving six women, with alleged incidents spanning from 1999 to 2009. Prosecutors say Brand committed the charged offenses; Brand has pleaded not guilty and says he did not engage in non-consensual sexual activity. He arrived and left court with his wife, Laura Gallacher, after asking supporters to pray for them. Prosecutors have described allegations involving a hotel room, a TV workplace and a radio station. Court adjourned until Tuesday, with the trial expected to last up to about 10 weeks.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets treated the case as a serious legal reckoning while keeping Brand’s denials central. HuffPost set the trial against Brand’s shift from mainstream entertainer to an online figure blending wellness, conspiracy themes and religious devotion. Rolling Stone stressed that jury selection was only the procedural start, with arguments and witnesses still ahead.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets foregrounded the criminal-trial stakes and Brand’s denials, while leaning harder into public spectacle and family support. The New York Post framed the case around the clash between multiple accusations and Brand’s not-guilty position. Daily Mail invited audiences to follow the case closely and lingered on Laura Gallacher’s public support and Christian faith.
