What happened

Shane Gillis drew public rebukes from celebrities after using his third Saturday Night Live hosting monologue to joke about women’s workout clothes at public gyms. The bit framed gyms as places where women film workouts and men risk appearing behind them as leering strangers. Gillis called women in short gym shorts “whores,” described the shorts in sexualized terms, and joked that men were not supposed to look. Actor Dan Levy condemned the remarks as misogynistic. Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim posted a gym photo captioned, “Whore reporting for duty.” Singer Maren Morris posted a gym video with a similar caption. Gillis has not announced any further response.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the backlash as a response to misogyny, not as a dispute over taste in comedy. The Daily Beast emphasized celebrity pushback, including criticism from people tied to SNL’s orbit. MS NOW argued the routine was manosphere-coded provocation that failed to offer comedy, invention, or social value.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the backlash as another effort to police comedy and punish a successful nonliberal comedian. The New York Post cast Gillis as a target of woke scolds who resent his success. The Daily Wire argued critics ignored the punchline and misrepresented the setup. Fox News centered Levy’s claim that men’s silence helps enable sexual assault.
