The reporting
New Mexico Judge Bryan Biedscheid ordered Meta to pay $567 million into an abatement fund addressing harms to young people from Facebook and Instagram. The order, the second phase of a child-safety trial Meta lost, comes on top of $375 million in March civil penalties, bringing the case total to $942 million. The court earmarked $420 million for youth treatment services and the rest for awareness, prevention, screening and related costs over five years. Meta must also tighten child-account controls and limit young users’ app time in New Mexico.
