What happened

Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case after a Kenyan man living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus and died in Nairobi on Monday night. He fell ill about a month earlier in Congo, travelled overland to Kampala, then flew to Nairobi and arrived Saturday. The case is linked to an Ebola outbreak declared in eastern Congo in May, which has killed more than 4,000 people and spread across several provinces. The rare Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Health Minister Aden Duale urged calm, saying systems were in place to limit spread. The patient was screened at Nairobi airport, but symptoms were not detected. Officials identified 28 contacts and traced flight passengers for 21 days of isolation monitoring.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as cross-border spread from Congo through international travel, stressing containment over politics. Boston Globe emphasized the outbreak’s exceptional danger and rapid growth, calling it the “fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history”. It centered the next public-health task on contact tracing and monitoring for possible cases.
