What happened
The World Health OrganizationWorld Health OrganizationUnited Nations agency concerned with international public health said it found no evidence of ongoing transmission after a 28-year-old worker at Russia’s Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research InstituteIrkutsk Anti-Plague InstituteRussian anti-epidemic research institute died on Oct. 2 after developing pneumonia. The case drew concern because pneumonic plague was initially suspected; it can cause severe pneumonia and spread through respiratory droplets. Russian health authorities said the worker had pneumonia of unknown cause, and tests had not detected plague or other tested high-threat pathogens. Officials said more than 5,500 samples were tested, while about 200 contacts were placed under observation. The WHO said the cause remains unconfirmed and asked Russia for more clinical, epidemiological and laboratory information.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning outlets treated the scare as serious but not a reason for panic, focusing more on unresolved answers and public confusion than on lab-leak fears. HuffPost stressed that U.S. readers did not need to panic and criticized incorrect claims about treatment that made the episode sound more alarming. The Boston Globe centered the unanswered question of what killed the researcher.
From the right
Right-leaning outlets framed the case through concern about possible lab accidents, while also warning against premature pandemic fears. The Washington Examiner linked the episode to heightened worries about laboratory leaks after COVID-19. The Washington Times emphasized the unresolved medical mystery and the need for more investigation. American Thinker argued that fears of a new pandemic were overblown.
