Richard Williamson, an ultra-traditionalist Catholic bishop known for his Holocaust denial, died at 84 after a cerebral hemorrhage. He was excommunicated by the Vatican in 1988 and caused a major scandal in 2009 after Pope Benedict XVI rehabilitated him. Following backlash from his denial of the Holocaust, Williamson was expelled from his society. Despite his early influence, Williamson's views and actions led to a significant rift within the Society of St. Pius X and a fallout with the Vatican.
