Hortman Killer Sentenced
Vance Boelter received life sentences for killing Melissa Hortman and her husband.
Summary
Vance Boelter, 59, was sentenced in federal court to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years for killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Boelter pleaded guilty in June to six federal counts under a deal in which prosecutors did not seek the death penalty. Prosecutors said Boelter posed as a police officer during the June 14, 2025, attacks, which also wounded Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim imposed the sentence in Minneapolis.
