What happened

An NBC Los Angeles/Telemundo 52 news helicopter crashed in Los Angeles’ Chatsworth neighborhood while covering a separate bus accident Tuesday evening. Photojournalist Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw and an unidentified pedestrian on the ground were killed. The crew had been reporting on an SUV-bus collision; initial coverage said that crash killed at least two people and injured six, while later coverage put the death toll at three. NBC Los Angeles said the aircraft was NewsChopper4, used by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 and operated by Angel City Air. Anchor Colleen Williams said on air the station had lost contact with the crew before the crash was confirmed. Federal safety agencies, the NTSB and FAA, will investigate.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning outlets told the story as a chain of Los Angeles tragedies, then lingered on the newsroom grief. HuffPost led with the disaster-on-disaster frame, stressing that the aircraft went down during coverage of a deadly bus collision. The Daily Beast focused on colleagues absorbing the loss in real time, while HuffPost emphasized burning vehicles, storage containers and wreckage.

From the right
