What happened

Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts charged John Anthony Proia III, a 41-year-old Waltham man, with cyberstalking for allegedly harassing Katie Miller. Miller is a conservative podcaster and former Trump administration official married to White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. The investigation stirred turmoil inside the FBI’s Washington Field Office, including action against two senior counterterrorism supervisors over concerns about the probe. Prosecutors accuse Proia of contacting Miller more than 40 times over about two months, often late at night from changing numbers. They also say he messaged her parents with vulgar threats, while using internet calling tools to hide himself. Miller thanked Justice Department leaders and the FBI. Proia will face initial court proceedings; his lawyer did not immediately comment.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning accounts treated the case as both a threat case and a fight over law-enforcement judgment. CNN emphasized disturbing contacts aimed at Miller while also noting resistance inside the FBI. The Daily Beast highlighted doubts by casting the prosecution as Trump’s Justice Department moving against a military veteran despite concerns inside law enforcement.

From the right

Right-leaning accounts framed the case mainly as serious criminal conduct against a Republican-linked family. The New York Post lingered on repeated disturbing contacts to Miller and relatives, and cited Todd Blanche saying prosecution was warranted. The Washington Examiner highlighted the Justice Department’s description of the victim as a prominent Republican in the Washington area.
