What happened

A car drove into a crowd gathered in Newcastle, New South Wales, to farewell the Newcastle Knights rugby league team bus before the grand final. Police arrested the driver, an 18-year-old man, at the scene and took him for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Police said more than 1,000 people were in the area when emergency crews responded about 9:30 a.m. at a Wallsend roundabout. Assistant Police Commissioner David Waddell said reports suggested erratic driving before the crash. Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver was a Knights supporter who became excited. Two injured people were critical. Police said terrorism was not suspected, and the investigation continues.

How each side covered it

Left-leaning accounts treated the crash as a sudden mass-injury scene at a team sendoff, with supporters and children central to the harm. The Guardian emphasized police focus on the young driver, citing David Waddell’s account of erratic driving before control was lost. Al Jazeera highlighted police saying the crash was not believed to be terrorism.

From the right

Right-leaning accounts led with rugby fans and injured children, giving the story a local community frame.
