What happened

A woman fatally stabbed 7-year-old Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood on Saturday. Police said the woman approached the child on a sidewalk near South Cottage Grove Avenue shortly before noon and stabbed her multiple times in the back with a sharp object. Edi Mari had been walking hand-in-hand with her older sister, and police said the attacker and child were not known to each other. She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The medical examiner classified her death as a homicide caused by multiple stab wounds. Bystanders detained the suspect until police arrived; she remains in police custody. Police had not announced charges, and the motive remained unknown.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Seattle Times, under the headline “Police say woman fatally stabbed 7-year-old girl walking in Chicago”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the killing as a shocking stranger attack, then split between community heroism and blame aimed at city politics. The New York Post called the suspect a “twisted stranger” and emphasized bystanders who detained her as “brave”. The Post Millennial tied the killing to Chicago’s condition under Democratic leadership and criticized Mayor Brandon Johnson’s policing views.
