Florida School Bus Crash Kills 2

What happened

A school bus overturned in a four-vehicle crash in Winter Haven, Florida, killing a 10th-grade girl on the bus and a person in a silver Jeep. Several people were injured, with at least five listed as trauma-alert patients and one person in critical condition. The bus was carrying 37 high school students, its driver and the driver’s 9-year-old daughter to Winter Haven High School. Authorities said a westbound Chevy Malibu crossed the center line and hit the bus near its rear wheels. The impact tore off a tire, pushed the bus into a head-on crash with the Jeep, and left it on its roof. The sheriff said the Malibu crossed for unknown reasons, and the investigation remains open.

Left-leaning outlets framed the crash mainly as a school-day tragedy, putting the student’s death and injuries at the center. The New York Times used authorities’ account to stress the loss of a high school student and the harm to others. It also cited Sheriff Grady Judd on the sedan crossing the center line while leaving the reason unresolved.

Right-leaning outlets emphasized the wrong-lane vehicle as the trigger, while lingering on the horror of a student’s death. Fox News cited Grady Judd describing a car entering the bus’s lane and starting the chain reaction. The New York Post cast the case as a horrific school-bus crash centered on a 10th grader’s death. World News Group highlighted Judd’s view that more deaths were avoided and families needed prayer.
