Platner Vote Shifts

A dozen Democrats qualified for the ballot at a July 25 Maine Democratic Party convention to choose a new U.S. Senate nominee after Graham Platner formally withdrew from the race. Platner, who had been the nominee, suspended his campaign after a report accused him of sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend in 2021; he denied the allegation. At the first debate, eight contenders largely aligned with Platner’s platform, including calls to abolish ICE, Medicare for All and criticism of Israel. The compressed process has left candidates courting Platner’s supporters while party leaders promise a fair, transparent selection.
