The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most outlets agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

Ruby Rippey, Gavin Newsom’s former appointments secretary, publicly gave her fullest account of their 2005 affair in a Vanity Fair essay published Tuesday, disputing how the California governor has described it in recent years. Rippey wrote that she was married to Newsom campaign manager Alex Tourk and struggling with alcoholism when the relationship began while Newsom was San Francisco mayor. She said Kamala Harris advised her after the scandal broke in 2007 to avoid speaking publicly. Newsom’s office said he acknowledged his role and publicly apologized.
