The reporting
President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to hear his bid to overturn the $83.3 million defamation verdict E. Jean Carroll won in a 2024 federal civil trial. The Justice Department filed separately in support, seeking to let the federal government replace Trump as defendant under a law covering employees sued for acts within their official duties. A federal appeals court in New York upheld the award and declined rehearing in late April; the Supreme Court recently rejected Trump’s separate appeal of Carroll’s $5 million sexual abuse and defamation judgment.
