The reporting
President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to remove Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook, with an Aug. 5 White House letter saying he is considering firing her from the Board of Governors. The letter, signed by deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, says there is “sufficient reason to believe” Cook made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements and gives her 21 days to respond in writing. Cook has denied the mortgage-fraud allegations. The move follows a June Supreme Court decision that left Cook in her post while she contests Trump’s earlier removal attempt.

Political Fed purgeLeans Left
Trump’s effort to remove Lisa Cook is a political attack rather than a good-faith accountability move. He is trying to weaken an independent Federal Reserve governor and expand his influence over the board by pressuring her out.
