The reporting
Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary this week, defeating four-term Rep. Haley Stevens by fewer than 16,000 votes after Stevens drew about 728,000 votes. El-Sayed, a former public health official, ran on Medicare for All, affordability, campaign-finance restrictions and opposition to U.S. support for Israel’s war in Gaza. He will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November in a swing-state race for a Senate seat. Michigan Democrats moved to unify behind El-Sayed, while Rogers appealed directly to Democrats who backed Stevens.
Analysis & opinion
Progressive InsurgencyBalanced
El-Sayed’s victory proves that grassroots progressive politics can overcome establishment power and big money. Voters are backing a people-powered agenda that rejects hatred and challenges the Democratic establishment from the left.
Electability LiabilityMostly Right
Abdul El-Sayed’s progressive, divisive primary win makes him a weak general-election candidate in swing-state Michigan. His nomination gives Mike Rogers and Republicans a major opening with moderates and disaffected Democrats, making a GOP Senate pickup more likely.
