Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on ABC’s This Week on Sunday that Democrats should judge candidates by their current positions, invoking a local councilman’s line that “Woke 1 was crazy” when asked about Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong. Host Jon Karl cited Hong’s 2020 posts supporting abolishing prisons and police and canceling Thanksgiving, positions Hong has since walked back. The exchange prompted conservative commentators to accuse Ocasio-Cortez of trying to move past left-wing positions she and other Democrats previously supported as 2026 races loom.

Democrats and left-wing politicians are trying to downplay, rewrite, or escape responsibility for the extreme woke positions they previously promoted. They should be held accountable because those ideas caused real political and social damage, and voters should not accept attempts to dismiss them as old news.
