President Donald Trump’s National Guard deployment in Washington has reached its one-year mark and is expected to remain until 2029, with projected costs of about $1.4 billion through the end of his term. Trump declared a “crime emergency” on August 11 last year after the Aug. 3 assault and attempted carjacking of Edward Coristine, and nearly 2,000 Guard members were sent to the capital. The U.S. Marshals Service says the task force has made more than 16,000 arrests, while critics say violent-crime reductions remain unproven.
