The reporting
President Donald Trump said Aug. 11 that his administration is examining whether the federal government has legal authority to block New York City’s new pied-à-terre tax on high-value second homes backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul. The annual surcharge applies to nonprimary houses valued above $5 million and condominium or co-op units worth at least $1 million. A Staten Island judge temporarily paused the tax after three homeowners sued to delay its rollout. Trump argued the tax would drive wealthy owners out of New York, reducing broader tax revenue.
Analysis & opinion
Tax FairnessLeft & Center
New York City’s pied-à-terre tax would make wealthy second-home owners contribute more fairly to the city. It could also expose people who avoid higher taxes by claiming their real primary residence is somewhere else.
