The reporting
Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democratic Socialists of America-backed lawmaker from Jacksonville, won Tuesday’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, defeating retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman for the nomination. Vindman, a central witness in Donald Trump’s first impeachment, had outspent Nixon by nearly 13-to-1 and was widely backed by party establishment figures. Nixon will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ appointee to the seat, in November. Her campaign emphasized universal health care, free child care, higher taxes on wealthy households, abolishing ICE and reducing incarceration.
Analysis & opinion
Grassroots InsurgencyLeft & Center
Nixon’s upset proves that grassroots left-wing candidates can still defeat better-funded establishment Democrats. Democratic socialists remain a real force in primaries, and their organizing strength can threaten party insiders elsewhere.
Resistance FadingMostly Center
The anti-Trump resistance era has lost much of its pull inside Democratic politics. Voters are moving away from resistance-branded candidates and showing more interest in other kinds of Democratic contenders.
Socialist LiabilityLeans Right
Angie Nixon’s nomination reflects a Democratic drift toward radical democratic socialism and Marxist-aligned politics. That leftward turn makes Democrats more vulnerable in Florida and could badly damage their chances against Republicans like Ashley Moody.
