The reporting
Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed distanced himself Monday from progressive commentator Hasan Piker after Piker said American Jews’ public identification with Israel could lead to violence against Jews in the United States. In an Aug. 20 livestream, Piker said that if Jews in America keep presenting themselves as “singularly invested in Israel,” “someone’s going to come around and take action” against American Jews rather than Israel. El-Sayed said he opposed violence against Jews and antisemitism. The episode drew criticism from Rep. Hillary Scholten and came as El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in a Senate race central to control of the chamber.
Analysis & opinion
Antisemitic RemarksMostly Right
Hasan Piker’s comments about Jews and Israel were hateful, threatening, or otherwise unacceptable. They warranted condemnation and political consequences rather than being treated as ordinary partisan rhetoric.
El-Sayed AccountabilityBalanced
Abdul El-Sayed bears responsibility for tying himself to Hasan Piker and then failing to respond forcefully enough when the backlash grew. His distancing looks inadequate or opportunistic because the association only became a problem once it created political damage.
