President Donald Trump said the U.S. will impose 50% tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts and steel starting Jan. 1, 2027, after trade talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government collapsed. The move would double 25% auto tariffs, while separate 50% duties on $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect over the weekend. Canada plans to announce retaliatory tariffs Tuesday, following Carney’s pledge of dollar-for-dollar retaliation. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Canada should be ready to cut electricity and critical minerals exports to the U.S. if the dispute worsens.
