The reporting
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed two executive orders ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, including one designating Sept. 11 a citywide Day of Remembrance and Service. After the signing, he gave a ceremonial pen to a top aide who previously represented a convicted al Qaeda member whose brother-in-law hijacked the plane that struck the Pentagon. More than 98,000 people have signed a petition asking memorial organizers to bar Mamdani from the Ground Zero ceremony. Rudolph W. Giuliani said Mamdani should not attend; Mamdani has said he will go.
Analysis & opinion
Disrespected 9/11Leans Right
Mamdani’s actions around the 9/11 commemoration showed disrespect for the victims and their families. Giving symbolic honor to someone tied to the defense of an al-Qaeda-linked defendant was an insult to the solemnity of the occasion.
