What happened
A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting Wilber Rafael Garces Perez after his lawyers sued to stop his removal. Garces Perez is a 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash driver shot by an ICE officer in Austin during a food delivery stop. The Department of Homeland Security says he was in the U.S. illegally and had a final deportation order. His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, says he entered legally as an asylum seeker, had a work permit, and missed a hearing because notice went to an old address. Officials including Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza and Rep. Joaquin Castro want him kept in the U.S. as a material witness. Judge Orlando Garcia ordered him to appear Sept. 30.
