Broadview Six Prosecutor Resigns
A federal prosecutor quit under protest, accusing Trump's DOJ of scapegoating her.
What happened
Sheri Mecklenburg, the lead prosecutor in the Broadview Six case, resigned from the Justice Department and said she did so “under protest.” Federal judges had already thrown out the remaining charges with prejudice after apparent prosecutorial misconduct surfaced, including problems with the grand jury process. The case grew from protests outside an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Chicago. Mecklenburg says Chicago U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros personally directed felony charges despite her view that misdemeanors fit better; his office rejects her account. She says DOJ leaders forced her to retire to keep healthcare benefits. Judge April Perry is weighing a special-counsel request.
