Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to announce a 20% cut in Pentagon billets reserved for generals and admirals. The reductions would double the 10% cut in general and flag officer positions he ordered last year. Hegseth is expected to outline the plan Wednesday at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. His earlier reform push used the slogan “less generals, more GIs,” as he argued for a leaner force with less headquarters bloat. He has already fired or pushed out more than two dozen military leaders, drawing concern from lawmakers in both parties. Hegseth says the cuts will move resources and authority closer to troops. The services must complete the changes by Jan. 1, 2027.
