What happened

The FBI distributed a classified internal report to employees, dubbed the “Patel Report,” saying it examines past chapters where the bureau “fell short.” Separate accounts say FBI Director Kash Patel repeatedly pressed agents to keep pursuing President Donald Trump’s false 2020 election-fraud claims after they found no evidence. The report fits Patel’s push to revisit the bureau’s past and punish officials he believes politicized it, despite telling senators he would not look backward. Current and former officials said election requests came from the White House; the White House did not admit directing FBI fraud cases. FBI leaders called the report accountability. The bureau has not explained who drafted it.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Patel as turning the FBI toward Trump’s grievances, not neutral reform. The Daily Beast emphasized sources who said agents were pushed to spend “significant resources” despite coming up empty. It also cast Patel as Trump’s “yes-man,” while MS NOW described the report as rewriting history for the president.
