What happened

Sen. John Kennedy said he is considering running for president in 2028, but has not made a decision. He currently plans to seek reelection to the Senate that year and said he would look at a presidential bid if he no longer thought he could be effective there. The 2028 election will be the first since 2012 in which Donald Trump is not the Republican nominee. No major candidate has formally entered the race, though politicians in both parties have not ruled it out. Vice President JD Vance is widely viewed as a likely Republican candidate, but Kennedy declined to compare himself with Vance. He said fuller fields would help both parties and joked about “a bunch of goobers” as rivals.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Joe.My.God., under the headline “Sen. Foghorn Leghorn: I Might Run For President”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed Kennedy’s talk as conditional and as part of a still-open Republican succession fight. Washington Examiner emphasized that he was not abandoning his Senate plans unless the field looked weak. The Gateway Pundit lingered on a wide-open field in which Vance is prominent and more contenders are welcome. New York Post cast Kennedy as willing to question Trump and defend Cotton.
