What happened

The Justice Department filed denaturalization actions against 40 naturalized U.S. citizens in multiple federal courts between Aug. 21 and Oct. 2. The department called it the largest number of such complaints submitted in one period under the Trump administration. Federal law allows citizenship to be revoked if naturalization was obtained illegally or through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation. Some cases cite pre-naturalization crimes as evidence applicants lacked good moral character. Others allege concealed or false information during the citizenship process. Attorney General Todd Blanche said the defendants hid critical facts. The cases are civil actions, so courts must decide whether to revoke citizenship.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: Al Jazeera, under the headline “Trump officials pursue record number of cases to strip US citizenship”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the effort as an immigration-fraud crackdown focused on unlawfully obtained citizenship. The Daily Wire emphasized alleged serious crimes and foreign-agent cases, and cited Todd Blanche calling it the “largest denaturalization effort” in modern history.
