What happened

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats need to win the Senate to stop Trump from putting what he called “MAGA” justices on the Supreme Court and lower courts. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal said support for a Trump high-court nominee would be “slim to none.” The Senate majority controls whether judicial nominees get hearings and votes. Republicans hold 53 seats, and Democrats need four gains to take control. In 2016, Mitch McConnell’s Republican-led Senate blocked Merrick Garland, leaving the seat for Trump nominee Neil Gorsuch. Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego urged that same approach. Schumer said nominee quality would matter; Republican Senator John Barrasso said Democrats would block every Trump nominee. No Supreme Court vacancy has been announced.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the vow as a tool for resisting Trump’s courts agenda, not just a campaign message. MEDIAite cast Democrats as signaling a possible blockade of Supreme Court nominees they see as ideological allies. The Boston Globe emphasized how court fights could spill into midterm campaigns and contested elections. Raw Story highlighted Democrats’ argument that Garland’s treatment justified a similar hard line.

From the right

Only one right-leaning outlet we track covered this: Daily Mail, under the headline “Samuel Alito, 76, admits he weighed quitting Supreme Court this year”.
