What happened

President Donald Trump approved Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recommendation that Nidal Hasan be executed by a U.S. Army firing squad. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009, killing 13 people and wounding 32. A military court convicted him of 13 counts of murder in 2013 and sentenced him to death, which survived appeals. Hasan said he attacked to prevent U.S. soldiers from deploying against Muslims and described his actions as defending the Taliban’s leadership. Hegseth said victims and survivors deserved justice without further delay, then posted, “Justice.” If carried out, it would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961. The Army secretary will set the date and location.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: CNN, under the headline “Trump approves firing squad for execution of Nidal Hasan for 2009 Fort Hood massacre | CNN Politics”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the approval as delayed justice and emphasized terrorism more than process. Fox News cast Trump and Hegseth as clearing the way after a long wait. The New York Post cited Sean Parnell calling Hasan “the jihadist” and argued official euphemisms had hidden Islamist radicalism.
