What happened

German authorities arrested former BND chief August Hanning and former aide Manfred D. on espionage-related allegations. Prosecutors suspect Hanning of treasonous espionage, obtaining state secrets and attempted treason, while Manfred D. is accused of aiding him. Hanning led Germany’s foreign intelligence agency from 1998 to 2005. Prosecutors allege the men agreed in 2010 that Manfred D. would regularly provide BND intelligence for payment. The case grew from evidence found during a separate inquiry into the alleged abduction of businesswoman Christina Block’s children. BND President Martin Jaeger said the agency opened an internal investigation when concerns arose. Prosecutors say the foreign service involved has not been identified.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets treated the arrest as a grave espionage and treason scandal involving a former leader of Germany’s intelligence service. HuffPost led with state-secrets allegations against the ex-spy chief and, citing prosecutors, described an alleged paid pipeline of BND intelligence to Hanning.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the case as an insider betrayal exposed through a separate inquiry, stressing both alleged conduct and discovery. The New York Post leaned on prosecutors’ account of a former chief obtaining confidential material from a trusted aide. RedState lingered on the kidnapping investigation as the unexpected path to a larger national-security scandal.
