What happened

Chris LaCivita and James Blair traveled to Republika Srpska before its election to provide paid advice on voting issues. Blair led the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. political operation, and LaCivita was a senior adviser to it, while both were helping Republicans prepare for the U.S. midterms. Republika Srpska is governed by a nationalist party and has cultivated close ties with Russia and Vladimir Putin. Trump said they were outside consultants allowed to take other clients, but he threatened to terminate them if he found a conflict. A source familiar with their work said the advice involved election-integrity concerns. Trump said he would ask about their clients.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the episode as a crisis inside Trump’s circle, with the advisers’ roles suddenly at risk. The Guardian emphasized Trump backing away from trusted aides over possible conflicts. CNN cited a veteran Republican saying the advisers were profiting from their association with Trump. The Daily Beast lingered on anger inside MAGA world over overseas work in the campaign’s final stretch.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets treated the matter as a test of whether outside work crossed Trump’s conflict line. Newsmax emphasized Trump’s stance that consulting was allowed unless it created a reason for dismissal. The Daily Mail focused on anger that Trump’s midterm strategists were cashing in on a Putin-aligned client as Republicans feared heavy losses.
