What happened

Democratic congressional nominee Bernadette Greene-Placentia says two men raped her after she was struck over the head while repairing a campaign sign. She said the attack happened in a Sun City parking lot around 2 a.m. on Aug. 14. Greene-Placentia is challenging Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District in November. She told the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 31, more than two weeks later. Greene-Placentia said she hesitated because she felt embarrassed and wanted to forget it. She said she later went public to support women who survive sexual violence. The sheriff’s office confirmed a report and said the investigation is ongoing.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Greene-Placentia’s decision to speak publicly as survivor advocacy and a moment of campaign-trail violence demanding accountability. MS NOW emphasized her stated aim of supporting survivors of sexual abuse. Raw Story lingered on the shock around the account, calling it a “harrowing” attack that drew horrified reaction.
