What happened

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators heckled New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at an Oct. 7 vigil, calling him a traitor and accusing him of genocide. Hours earlier, Mamdani had mourned Israelis killed and taken hostage in Hamas’s attack, then focused much of his statement on accusing Israel of ongoing genocide in Gaza. Mamdani has long criticized Israel’s war conduct and defended Palestinian rights, angering Jewish groups and moderates while leaving some activists dissatisfied. Rep. Dan Goldman said the statement overshadowed Hamas’s attack. Mamdani said mourning must include Israelis killed by Hamas and Palestinians killed since. Israel rejects his genocide claim and says it targets Hamas while limiting civilian harm.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed Mamdani as caught between grief for Israelis and condemnation of Gaza’s suffering, rather than as satisfying either camp. The Boston Globe said he tried to “thread a needle” and angered both Israel’s defenders and pro-Palestinian protesters. Mediaite highlighted Hasan Piker’s argument that public confrontation was valid because activists lacked private access. Joe.My.God cited Mike Huckabee attacking Mamdani’s genocide claim as false and insensitive.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the episode as proof that Mamdani’s Israel stance was hostile and politically corrosive, not merely difficult to balance. The New York Post cast his anniversary message as hijacking mourning to attack Israel, portrayed the hecklers as radical anti-Israel activists turning on an ally, and lingered on his dinner at a Palestinian restaurant critics linked to inflammatory rhetoric.
