What happened

Trump political advisers James Blair and Chris LaCivita traveled to Republika Srpska shortly before its October 4 election and did paid consulting work for the regional government on voting issues. Blair led Trump’s outside political operation, and LaCivita was a senior adviser and former co-manager of Trump’s 2024 campaign. The work drew scrutiny because the region is governed by a nationalist, Russia-aligned movement whose leader, Milorad Dodik, has pushed secession and met Vladimir Putin before the vote. Trump said he did not know about the clients or trip, and would terminate the advisers if he found a conflict. The super PAC said they stayed engaged in midterm work while abroad.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the trip as a scandal over access, money and foreign influence rather than routine consulting. AlterNet cast the advisers as cashing in on Trump ties, while Trump tried to distance himself. New Republic emphasized advisers choosing lucrative foreign work as midterms approached. Al Jazeera focused on alarm over operatives aiding a Putin-aligned force.
