What happened

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James’s office as special prosecutor in the Cornell sexual-assault case after James’s official X account had said she stood with Jane Doe and referred to survivors. Former Cornell student Gillio Lopes, one defendant in Doe’s lawsuit, sued to remove James, arguing the post showed bias and prejudgment. Doe alleges seven former Chi Phi fraternity members sexually assaulted her while she was intoxicated in October 2024; the allegations have not been established in court. The local district attorney first declined charges, citing Doe’s original account as consensual, then reopened the case after her suit. At a televised debate, Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy said James had prejudiced the case; James said she showed empathy, not bias. A hearing is set for October 29.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: MEDIAite, under the headline “Letitia James Pushed Hard In Debate On How She Can Be Impartial On Cornell 7 Case Given Her…”.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets framed the debate as a test of James’s judgment, tying the Cornell dispute to wider claims about politics and public safety. The Gateway Pundit cast James’s office as a political weapon that neglected crime, fraud and safety. The New York Post portrayed Komatireddy as better prepared and James as caught off guard. Fox News cited Andrew Miltenberg saying James “publicly took sides” before reviewing evidence.
