What happened

President Trump awarded Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella the National Medal of Technology and Innovation hours after his Labor Department suspended Microsoft from PERM processing. The suspension also covered Adobe and six IT services companies, while the administration opened J-1 exchange visa investigations at universities including Stanford, Harvard and MIT. PERM is generally the labor certification employers need before sponsoring a worker for an employment-based green card; it is not a visa. The administration said companies used foreign workers to replace or undercut Americans. Microsoft said most filings were for existing employees and comparable H-1B workers receive the same pay. The measures do not change existing visa holders’ status.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the case as an expansion of the administration’s immigration crackdown, while stressing risks to skilled talent. The Los Angeles Times emphasized the administration’s worker-protection argument, quoting Vice President JD Vance saying wage undercutting “has to stop”. The Boston Globe lingered on the tension between restricting immigration and keeping international talent tied to U.S. growth.

From the right

Right-leaning outlets cast the fight as a worker-first crackdown on a visa system that benefits large companies. Just the News emphasized the administration’s move as action against suspected abuse and corporate fraud. Breitbart News highlighted claims that corporate visa programs supply cheap foreign labor, and cited JD Vance mocking progressive support for that labor flow.
